About the role

New to insurance? This is your opportunity to put your career on the fast track.

Our Specialty Lines Underwriter Development Program is a 24-month accelerated learning experience designed to give you unparalleled expertise and grow your career in an exciting industry.  In this rotational program, mentors, managers, and underwriting coaches will teach you the ins and outs of our specialty insurance business through a variety of learning styles.

But wait, what exactly IS Specialty Lines?  And what does an underwriter do?

Specialty Lines is a major division of our business that provides insurance solutions to unique industries with complex product needs such as Directors and Officers, Professional Liability, Crime, Technology, Construction, Equipment Breakdown, and Farm insurance.

Our Underwriters understand our products inside and out.  As a member of the team, you’d become a champion of risk assessment and work directly with Intact’s network of Brokers – the people who sell our products to businesses – to make sure they understand the products, know how to market them, and help them to evaluate the potential risks of taking on certain portfolios.

Through this program, you will:

  • Get hands-on exposure to 3 different verticals within Specialty Lines.

  • Learn the technical aspects of insurance: analyzing requests for quotes, renewals, policy changes, and recommend solutions; rate and prepare quotes for new business and renewals; and make recommendations for continued department improvement.

  • Learn in inspiring ways on-the-job in a collaborative work environment, self-study, and a classroom.

  • Build relationships with our Broker partners – the core of our business – and learn the importance of living our values every day.

  • Be involved in stimulating, challenging projects and development opportunities to help you grow your skills and expertise.

  • Build your professional networks – both at Intact and industry events.

  • Earn a competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package from day one. After completing the 24-month program, you will graduate as a Level II Underwriter ready to dive into the world of Specialty insurance and manage your own portfolios. You’ll be placed in one of our Specialty Lines teams in the region you are located.

What you bring to the table:

  • New grad or recently graduated from post-secondary within the last 5 years.

  • Have less than 3 years of experience in the insurance industry (asset, but not required).

  • Available to join our Development program full-time in late Spring 2026.

  • You are interested in pursuing the Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation (one of the program requirements).

  • You care about people and are a natural at building and nurturing relationships (a key part of this role!).

  • You are an enthusiastic curious learner who thrives within a team or independently.

  • You have a creative approach to problem-solving and are a natural at taking calculated risks.

  • You have exemplary analytical skills and can make informed decisions.

  • You are a skilled communicator who can adapt your approach to your audience.

  • You can influence decisions and negotiate strategically.

  • You are an enthusiastic learner who thrives within a team or independently.
