About the role

Coast Underwriters is looking for an Underwriter I to join our team in Toronto!

This is a hybrid role that requires a minimum of two (2) days per week working in the office in Downtown Toronto.

What you’ll do here:

  • Analyze requests for quotes, renewals and policy changes, and recommend solutions

  • Accept, reject, endorse, renew or cancel policies following Coast's underwriting guidelines and procedures, applicable laws and regulations and subject to authority level as specified by underwriting manager

  • Support brokers regarding underwriting and rating policies

  • Focus on sustainable profitable growth

  • Use effective communication and negotiating skills to maintain healthy relationships within and outside the company

  • Participate in broker visits, industry functions and marketing events

  • Respond to broker requests and concerns in a timely manner

  • Rate and prepare quotes for new business and renewals

  • Handle policy transactions including renewals, endorsements and cancellations

  • Support team members within Coast Underwriters Limited as well as other divisions at Intact

  • Maintain great relationships with brokers and travel for meetings as required


What you bring to the table:

  • Minimum 1 year of relevant Commercial Lines underwriting experience preferred

  • Candidates with prior marine insurance industry experience will be prioritized

  • Strong customer service and time management skills

  • Strong knowledge in Microsoft Office products

  • Inquisitive, analytical and self-motivated individual with strong critical thinking skills

  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to work under pressure and flexibility to change

  • Team player possessing outstanding collaboration and communication skills

  • Ability to develop and maintain excellent relationships with brokers

  • Ability to make decisions in time sensitive situations, provide recommended course of action and take calculated risks

  • Interested in and stay up to date on business trends or other developments impacting our industry

  • CIP designation or working towards it

  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.
