About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Underwriter, Specialty Solutions, to join our growing team!

As a Senior Underwriter in our Specialty Solutions, Construction department, you will play an important role in growing the Construction & Builders Risk business segment. Our team will count on you to make effective business decisions to achieve premium growth goals and maintain strong retention levels through your positive relationships with our distribution network. In this role, you will analyze, select, and price Construction, Contracting & Builders Risk business working within Intact guidelines and pricing.


What you’ll do here:

  • Be a proactive member of the underwriting team, maintaining standards for productivity and service expectations for new business, renewals and endorsements by underwriting risks within binding authority limits

  • Develop business opportunities by fostering new broker relationships and maintaining strong internal and external business partner relationships

  • Participate in broker visits, insurance industry functions, conferences and marketing events

  • Communicate changes related to product pricing, underwriting guidelines and new products

  • Provide underwriting training to new hires, lending expertise to mentor other underwriters

  • Support and mentor team members within Specialty Solutions as well as with other divisions at Intact 


What you bring to the table:

  • University degree and CIP or FCIP designation  

  • Minimum 5 years underwriting experience in large Construction, Contracting & Builders Risk (Civil & Erection Projects)

  • Technical knowledge of commercial Property, Liability & Builders Risk policy wordings for large commercial Property customers

  • Strong working knowledge of catastrophe models

  • Ability to deal effectively and respectfully with individuals at all levels of the organization  

  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and in collaboration with national departmental teams

  • Highly organized, with the ability to work towards  goals while adapting to change in a fast paced environment

  • Effective analytical, negotiating and decision making skills  

  • Ability to make decisions in time sensitive situations, address complex problems, provide recommended course of action and take calculated risks

  • High level of integrity, confidentiality and accountability  

  • Ability to work well under tight deadlines, including organizational and time management skills  

  • Up to 10% travel

  • No Canadian work experience required however must be eligible to work in Canada.
