About the role

From coast-to-coast, our inspiring colleagues are at the heart of what we do best:  helping people, businesses and society prosper in good times and be resilient in bad times. With our team, you’ll bring this purpose to life every day by living our Values, being open to change, and pursuing your goals.

At Intact, we’ll give you countless opportunities to learn and grow, alongside a diverse and passionate community of experts – the best the industry has to offer.  You’ll be empowered to be your best self, do your best work, and make a meaningful impact. Here, you can: shape the future of insurance, win as a team, and grow with us.

About the role:

We’re looking for a Senior Building Inspector to join our growing Risk Management team!

In this role, you’ll work closely with internal teams, clients, regulators, and industry partners to assess and manage property and liability risks. You’ll conduct on-site inspections, identify potential hazards, and provide practical, tailored recommendations to reduce exposures. These could include risks related to fire, natural hazards, equipment breakdown, liability, and more.

What you’ll do here:

  • Conduct physical inspections of insured locations on behalf of both our Insuring Companies and our clients

  • Identify and analyze property and liability exposures, including fire, natural hazard, equipment breakdown, and liability risks

  • Calculate appropriate values of insured locations and deliver high-quality written reports that include findings, valuations, and practical recommendations

  • Build and maintain strong, trusting relationships with clients and Intact partners by understanding their needs and delivering responsive, service-focused support

  • Support client retention and business development by identifying opportunities to improve risk management strategies and delivering innovative solutions

  • Provide insurance marketing support through well-written Risk Control Reports that outline key exposures and mitigation recommendations

  • Compile accurate information to enable Underwriting to properly rate the risk.  The inspector must be able to analyze exposures and give opinions as to the quality of the risk.  Our markets and reinsurers rely heavily on the data collected.

  • Meet with clients to discuss risk management issues and formulate loss control remedies

  • Continuously develop your technical and professional skills to deliver value to clients and support the growth of our team

  • Foster a collaborative team culture across departments, energizing others to live Intact’s values

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

What you bring to the table:

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in Property Risk Control for large commercial/industrial/manufacturing and (commercial) liability insurance

  • Solid working knowledge of building construction practices, fire protection systems, and relevant codes and standards (including NFPA)

  • Experience completing design reviews for water-based fire protection systems and conducting related inspections and testing

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

  • High degree of initiative and ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Demonstrated client service experience, with the ability to adapt communication and solutions for a wide range of stakeholders

  • Business acumen and comfort working in a growing or entrepreneurial service environment

  • Proven ability to write, edit, and take ownership of report quality from start to finish

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including interpersonal and presentation abilities

  • Strong attention to detail, organizational, and prioritization skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer literacy

  • Understanding of Factory Mutual (FM) Data Sheets and field service methodology is an asset

  • Valid driver’s licence and clear 5-year driver’s abstract

Education:

  • Currently holding CET or P.Eng designation (required)

  • Willingness to pursue Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) and/or Certified Risk Management (CRM) designation (preferred)
