We are hiring a Claims Consultant for Specialty Lines at Intact Public Entities located in Cambridge, Ontario!
As a Claims Consultant, you are the senior technical claims leader and escalation point for high stakes, complex files, including matters in litigation. This is the most senior individual contributor role on our Claims team, and the step immediately before Claims Manager. You provide expert guidance that strengthens claim outcomes, improves consistency, and supports our claims and underwriting partners through technical leadership, quality oversight, and practical training.
What you’ll do here:
- Provide expert consultation on high exposure and complex claims, including strategy on liability, damages, coverage, reserving, investigation, and resolution planning.
- Lead and support litigation management on large, high stakes matters, including counsel strategy, pleadings and discovery support, expert coordination, mediation preparation, arbitration support, and settlement execution.
- Guide teams through effective negotiation and Alternative Dispute Resolution, and attend mediations, arbitrations, and hearings as required.
- Serve as a trusted technical advisor to Claims leadership, underwriting, and key internal partners on claim trends, systemic issues, and opportunities to reduce loss expense and improve outcomes.
- Conduct quality assurance activity, including targeted file reviews and audits, and translate findings into clear coaching, technical recommendations, and process improvements.
- Help enhance claims guidelines, standards, and programs to support consistent, disciplined claim handling and cost control.
- Identify meaningful measures to monitor service quality and effectiveness, and share insights to strengthen performance across the team.
- Support technical learning and development by assessing needs, developing content, and contributing to training and knowledge sharing.
- Stay current on relevant case law and emerging issues, and help interpret and apply legal developments in a practical, claims focused way.
What you bring to the table:
- Significant claims experience, typically 10 plus years, with proven success handling complex, high exposure claims, including files in active litigation.
- Legal experience, legal training, CIP/FCIP are assets, but not required.
- Strong multi-line (primarily complex Casualty Claims), including coverage analysis, investigation planning, exposure assessment, and damages evaluation.
- Demonstrated ability to make sound, defensible decisions under pressure, and to communicate them clearly to stakeholders at all levels.
- Advanced negotiation skills and experience with mediation and other ADR processes.
- Track record of mentoring, coaching, and elevating technical performance across a team through practical, respectful guidance.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a disciplined approach to documentation, file quality, and accountability.
- Comfort operating in a fast-moving environment where priorities shift and you are expected to lead through ambiguity.
- Experience supporting complex litigation strategy, interpreting case law, or working closely with defence and coverage counsel.
What you can expect:
- A role with real influence and visibility where your technical judgment shapes outcomes on the hardest files.
- The opportunity to lead quality and capability across the team without being in a people leader role yet.
- A workplace that values practical expertise, calm leadership, and people who can handle complexity with confidence.
