With our team, you’ll bring this purpose to life every day by living our Values, being open to change, and pursuing your goals.
At Intact we’ll give you countless opportunities to learn and grow, alongside a diverse and passionate community of experts – the best the industry has to offer. You’ll be empowered to be your best self, do your best work, and make a meaningful impact. Here, you can: shape the future of insurance, win as a team, and grow with us.
Our Commercial Lines Underwriter Academy is an accelerated 2-year learning experience designed to give you unparalleled expertise and grow your career in an exciting industry. This is a paid on-the-job training program to becoming a professional underwriter. The ideal candidates will demonstrate strong business acumen, excellent communication skills, an innovative mindset, and a strong eagerness to learn and grow. In this program, you’ll rotate through different teams while mentors, managers, and underwriting coaches teach you the ins and outs of our commercial insurance business through a variety of learning styles.
So, what exactly is Commercial Lines insurance? And what does an Underwriter do?
Commercial Lines is a major part of our operations that provides insurance solutions to businesses small and large in our communities so they can continue to run their business without the worry of tomorrow. We provide insurance products like property, casualty, and automobile coverage - through our network of Brokers across the country.
Our Underwriters understand our products inside and out. As a member of the team, you’d become a champion of risk assessment and work directly with Intact’s network of Brokers – the people who sell our products to businesses – to make sure they understand the products, know how to market them, and help them to evaluate the potential risks of taking on certain portfolios.
Through this 2-year program, you will:
· Start out as an Underwriting Assistant in your first rotation, gradually take on additional duties, progress to Underwriter Level I and finally graduate from the program as an Underwriter Level II
· Get exposure to different lines of commercial business. You build up the general knowledge you’ll need for underwriting success through rotations on different teams
· Learn the technical aspects of insurance: assessing and evaluating risk to make empowered decisions; and how to quote, negotiate and authorize new business and policy renewals
· Develop and learn in inspiring ways – instructor-led, on-the-job and self-study – in a collaborative work environment
· Be involved in stimulating, challenging business cases, complete courses as you work towards your Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) Designation and development opportunities to help you grow your skills and expertise
· Build relationships with our Broker partners – the core of our business – and learn how to live our values every day
· Increase your professional networks – both at Intact, within the industry and at events
After 2 action-packed years, you’ll emerge an Underwriter Level II ready to dive into the world of commercial insurance and manage your own portfolios. You’ll be placed in one of our Commercial Lines Property and Casualty teams in the region you have chosen.
While in the program, you will have the option to apply for our new International Development program currently under development. Successful applicants will join a cohort from Canada, the US and the UK who learn together to expand their knowledge on our international products and take their learning to the next level. International travel included!
Your journey doesn’t end there! Upon graduation, you’ll be well-versed and well-positioned to see where your exciting career at Intact will take you. Many of our program graduates have made the transition to leadership, including some Senior Vice Presidents!
